I call it play because it started with a pure love of words and the things I could do with them. They were building blocks and action figures. They revealed imaginary worlds. And unlike Barbie, I would never grow out of them. Words led me to a B.A. in English from Williams College and beckoned me afterwards to New York, where the real learning began. There, I cut my teeth as a writer and analyst at McGraw-Hill, then moved to ViA Marketing & Design (now The VIA Group), where I rose to Senior Copywriter, honing my craft on clients as varied as The Limited, Fraser Papers and Englewood Hospital.
After a short freelancing stint, I signed on as Senior Writer at Aveda, helping launch multiple product lines, developing mission-aligned messaging, managing web copy development, and playing well with others. But I’d tasted independence (it’s sweet), so in 2006 I went freelance for good.* Since then, I’ve worked with clients of every size and virtually every stripe. (If you want name dropping, or you just love lists, you’ll really like the next page.) I’ve partnered with branding and design agencies, all terrific talents and kindred creative spirits. And I’ve built a reputation as a writer who gets it right. So I plan to keep on playing.
*Belief #1: once you’ve mastered the rules of writing—like don’t start a sentence with “but”—you’re allowed to break them. (If the format or flow calls for it, of course.)
